Dell 6400/E1505 forum

I am going to upgrade my T1300 CPU with a T2400. Is this a simple swap or will I need to update the BIOS. I am using Vista Ultimate. Any other issues or details would be appreciated. Thanks, satwilson48@sunflower.com

Have you checked to ensure that a T2400 will work on the motherboard? Some of the power requirements are different for different chips.

Browsing Intel's site and other places on these forums, it looks like it's possible. You might want to double-check with Dell to see what processors your chipset supports.

Thanks, yes the t2400 was an option from Dell for this unit, there were only 2 motherboards made for this unit, the only difference being one had the video built into the Intel 945GM chipset and the other board had slots for optional video card upgrades. Checking Intels Website also revealed the power requirements to be compatible, I'm just not sure a BIOS update is needed or not.

Tried to check with Dell but they would only tell me for a fee because "my unit is out of warranty". I guess I may do that as a last resort. I will check with PartsPeople on Monday. They recycle these units and list 11 different TXXX CPUs as compatible with this model. Thanks

Quick update:BIOS update,simple swap,(1.6 to 1.8)(solo to duo), fun4me!! (it's the cheap/fun things that are really fun!!

The E1505/6400 use the Intel 945GM Express chipset. According to information available from Intel (google Intel 945GM Express chipset), the L7200,L7400, and L7600 are compatible with the 945GM. Not sure about socket compatibility or Dell BIOS support. satwilson

Great choice, should work great, my opinion better than the LXXX series. Make sure you have the latest BIOS update and should swap right in. What CPU are you replacing? For best results make sure you have plenty of RAM ( at least 2G ). Don't forget your thermal compound.

Amazingly, I bought the CPU on Ebay on Friday and it's here today. In the process, I vacuumed out the whole computer, cleaned off the massive layer of old thermal compound, used AS5, and got the T7200 in already. I had a T5200, and wanted VT-X. Can't say I'm feeling much difference in speed, and I have 4 (3.25 usable) G of RAM. I need to play around with my VMs and see how they're working.

I have not used VT-X before but am thinking about upgrading from Vista to Win7 to take advantage of of the XP virtual mode available in Win7. So how are your VMs working? What O/S do you use? I realize I would have to upgrade my Core Duo to Core2 Duo to support VT-X.

I still haven't fiddled with it too much, because the first T7200 was toast. Now I have another, stable one. Seems the VMs are running a bit faster, and I can enable both cores, too. I'm running XP SP3, Fedora, and even Puppy (really fast), all on Virtualbox. I've also attempted a hackintosh VM, but to no avail. Can't say if it's worth it (at $75 on eBay). I'm already thinking about a new laptop sometime, since my battery's wearing down and I'd be happy with something a little lighter and faster. Then again, this thing's been a real workhorse, I have to say.
