Dell D420 won't start

Hi,
I have a Dell Latitude D420 laptop which has suddenly stopped working. Its battery had become quite old and I was planning to replace it but I guess it should able to run directly on mains.

Yesterday after working on it for about half an hour it has gone dead. I have tried to boot it without the battery by plugging it directly to AC Mains but it still does not power up.

When I press the power button, only the three notification LEDs (NUM, CAPS, SCROLL) glow for about 4 seconds then stop.

Can anyone help?
