Question Dell inspiron 1545 cpu,ram upgrade

I would like to upgrade this newly acquired Del inspiron 1545, but I am not sure if the Core 2 Extreme QX9300 cpu is compatible with it. I would like to know before purchasing the cpu.I would also like to get it some new RAM, but I am not sure what ram i could get for it.

• About how old is this machine?
• If you plan to run Windows, what version?
• SSD installed now?
• How much RAM is installed now?

Swapping processors is risky. Obviously the sockets have to be compatible but that does not address whether the motherboard can power the new processor or whether there are other incompatibilities.

For memory, I've always had good luck with crucial.com but they have no memory for your computer. Never ran into that before.

The pc seems to be about 10-12 years old.I am planning to install either windows 8 or 10. I do not know if it is an SSD or HDD and it has 3gigs of ram right now.

A machine that old is not likely to run Windows 10. You can run the compatibility checker (download from Microsoft) to see if it will run Win 10.

Max RAM is 4GB of DDR2 RAM. If the drive is original, it will be a HDD not an SSD.
I would suggest you look for a newer used machine. If that is not in your budget, I would live with what it is. The one upgrade that might make it easier to live with would be an SSD. That will buy you more than a faster processor in general,

This wont be a computer ill use on a daily basis,as i have a computer already. i would just like to fix it up for fun and for if my main pc dies on me,to have something to tie me over while a new one is ordered.
