I am looking for a new laptop and will probably buy the Dell Inspiron 5559 (6500U), which has a DVD Drive tray.
The laptop has most of what I want except a better display (Which I can live without) and an SSD.
Can I replace the DVD Drive with an SSD I will buy separately?

(I do not need the most expensive SSD available, just something decent, and faster than the HDD, just so the computer will feel snappier)

If so, what SSD type do I need, which model do you recommend, and what extra adapter do I need to buy in order to put together the SSD?

I would like to know what components I need to buy, as well as instructions, on how to replace the DVD Drive on the Dell Inspiron 5559, with an SSD.

Thank you for the reply.

I did some research and found out some info...

I understand that there are SSD's which are 7mm thick and some which are 9.5mm thick, is this correct?

Also, there are different DVD drive thicknesses (12.7mm and 9.5mm I believe?) or length. Does this matter too?

How do I know if its 12.7mm (in which case I should get the caddy you linked to, or maybe 9.5mm caddy like so http://www.ebay.com/itm/1PC-Universal-9-5mm-2-5-SATA-2nd-HDD-Hard-Driver-Caddy-For-CD-DVD-Optical-Bay-/261511499919?pt=US_Drive_Bay_Caddies&hash=item3ce34cd08f)

So... what do I need to check before / after I get the laptop (there are many models even in the 5000 / 5559 category), in order to make sure I get the right components?

Basically I am interested in this SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB MZ75E250

Also, what is this used for?

Thanks :)

Re your ebay link that looks like a case you can put the dvd drive in once removed from the laptop. Then you can use it like an external usb dvd drive.

Cool. Hopefully it's the type where you can remove the front of the dvd drive and put it on this so it still looks like a normal laptop. I don't know if i need the silver or black as laptop is due on Wednesday.

It turned out I had one. The only problem faced was that it's at a good cm or two in from the body of the laptop so had to remove the dvd drive faceplate and stick that on. A bit fiddly but windows is now o. My 240gbssd and running perfectly with a 1tb drive to spare.
