Dell Inspiron Laptop fails to shut down

I am unable to power down my Dell Inspiron laptop. Previously I would use the Windows icon (lower right corner), then select Power, then select Shut Down. Nothing happens. So I pushed the power button on the laptop. Again nothing happened. Any suggestions?

When you use the Windows option for shutting down, do you see programs close and things like that or it just doesn't do anything at all? For using the power button, you have to hold it down to shut it off, pressing it I don't think will do anything.

Let's troubleshoot this a bit by taking out the battery, keeping the AC adapter plugged in and trying again.
