Dear,

I found a easy way and solved this issue, Please try this:

Step1: Unplug your Mic from the jack.
Step2: Goto Control Panel\All Control Panel Items--> Sounds--> Recordings
Step3: Right click and Disable both Microphone displayed.
Step4: Right click and Enable your external Mic(2)---> Apply--> OK
Step5: Plug your mic.

It worked with my dell inspiron laptop.

Thanks and Regards,
Shefeeh

All the previous solutions did not work for me with my Dell XPS. So I played with some settings and got it to work. (Using mic jack in-front).

1) Make sure your device is connected
2) Open Control Panel
3) Click sound
4) Click SigmaTel Audio
5) Right click on the mic jack
6) Allow pop-ups
7) Click Device Connected : Mic

Now you would assume that since your plugging a cord into the MIC jack, it would recognize it as a mic...sadly this is not the case. (for me at least). So you must tell it manually that it is a mic. Hope this works for you.
