Desktop not showing up on inspiron 1521

When I turn on my computer, it loads normally. However, my entire desktop with icons are not showing up, the screen is just black. Everything else seems to be working fine though, I am still able to access all my programs, internet explorer, etc from the start menu and the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 and am running Windows Vista home premium. I'm having a really hard time getting any help on this, any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

Desktop is a folder so just go there with Windows Explorer or My Computer.
