going back a ways: does anyone know the major difs between DCR-TRV730, 740, & 840? I assumed the 740 would be a step up from the 730, but very little info available - the 730 actually has higher digital & optical zooms, for one thing. Maybe the "30's" are actually the better units? (the 830 has a built-in small printer attachment vs. the 840); any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you very much for the info, Ken. really appreciate it. Bigger question now (sorry to show my ignorance) is: does all that make the 730 a step UP from - or DOWN from the 740? I have an opportunity to buy either one for about the same price, but assume they're both exactly equal for transferring old Hi-8 tapes to digital on PC (is that even correct?); however, if I'm to use for recording videos & photos, et al - does one offer a notice-able advantage(s) over the other? thanks again. Dan
 
As far as the imaging system goes the 730 and 740 are equivalent. So for videos and pictures you really won't notice a difference between the two. The 740 (1.6) has a slightly wider (larger) aperture than the 730 (1.8). I don't think that is enough of a difference to matter.

Perfect - thanks again; exactly what I needed to hear. I'm going to go with the lower price (as I also have 2 other Sony's - one a newer model that's also a (pretty good in dark environment) projector for movies - good for going over wrestling videos with individuals right after matches. appreciate the big help.
