if i take my direct tv box to a house with direct tv service will my box work there? i will add the service at my home has been turned off does that box only work with my old dish?

No, Since your service was discontinued they most likely have turned off your card.
If you still have service,(or card still works) then yes you could connect to the correct dish and view programming. The receiver requires the correct dish which is selected in the set up menu.
