So how long before Voom tanks and DirecTV snatches up their HD satelites
for us DTV users? ;-)

A number of industry pundits predict that exact scenario by the end of this
year.

It may work out, the other way around.

I was talking to a Time Warner installer a few months ago when I moved, he said he just got out of a meeting and they said VOOM will become their biggest competitor.

Sources please... I got a call from DirecTV the other day and they talked
to me about my programming with them. DirecTV didn't even know what VOOM or
HD programming was...

DirecTV knows. It was the knucklehead telemarketer calling you who didn't.

Well the telemarketer from DirecTV didn't know... he represents their
company... With two HDTVs now, I'm to where I can't watch anything but HDTV
programming now...

As a loyal DirecTV customer for five to ten years it pains me that they
can't compete with VOOM when it comes to HD programming.

Reply:
You mean as far as the number of channels? Perhaps........but there are
more variables when it comes to competition. For instance,DirecTV covers
the WHOLE CONUS ARC.Not so with VOOM.With only 1 satellite to
effectively cover only about 2/3 of the country, what kind of competition
do you call that? Sure,a FEW people who are fortunate to have high look
angles on the west coast can receive it,but the majority do not. With an
orbital location at 61° West longitude,it still looks like it is
DirecTV and C-Band for HDTV for me,because CableVision is too cheap to
launch another sat (or at least negotiate space on a bird) to accomodate
us here in the Pacific arc.

Remember Unity Motion? A precursor to voom...and like voom, launched way
before there was a large enough installed hdtv base to support it! Voom
cannot possibly make money for a long, long time and the question is how
deep cablevision's pockets are and how long they can possibly hemmorage
dollars before they either fold their tent or sell their subscriber list to
some company like Directv.
And don't forget...Voom isn't just re-broadcasting someone else's tv signal,
they're CREATING much of the content they broadcast. That, along with
satellite bandwidth leasing, proprietary receiving equipment ( which they
wanted to charge customers $750 for) and you have one VERY expensive
proposition....and a miniscule target audience.
At least my Unity Motion receiver could decode OTA HD when the sat service
disappeared. You won't even have that capability if/when VOOM eats the big
green wienie.

My VOOM receiver tunes OTA HD, as does everybody else's. Even if the
satellite goes away I'll still be able to use it for OTA HD. Granted, it
will not currently scan for OTA channels so I am limited to this area, but
the ability to scan is on the list of things that VOOM is planning to
implement.
