Disable the Trackpad on a Windows 7 Laptop

After installing Windows 7 on a laptop computer, sometimes you may want to disable the trackpad if you have connected a mouse with Bluetooth or USB. When you do this, you can prevent accidental mouse movements that could hamper your work.

In order to disable the trackpad on your Windows 7 or Windows 8 laptop computer, it is important that the appropriate hardware driver for the trackpad is installed on the operating system. When you install the correct driver for the trackpad, its corresponding icon is displayed in the notification area at the bottom-right corner of the screen. The icon can be used to disable the trackpad on your computer.

Assuming that you have already installed the appropriate device driver for the trackpad on your laptop, here is how you can disable the trackpad in Windows 7:

■Log on to your Windows 7 laptop.
■Once you are on the desktop screen, click the Up arrow icon from the notification area available at the bottom-right corner of the window.
■From the displayed icons, double-click the one that resembles the trackpad.



■On the opened Mouse Properties box, go to the Device Settings tab.
■Under the Devices list, click to select your trackpad device.
■Once selected, click the Disable button.



■On the displayed Warning box, click Yes to provide your consent to disable the trackpad on Windows 7 laptop.

Note: The process to disable the trackpad in Windows 8 is identical to the one used in Windows 7.
