Do i have to have a powerd sub with this unit

I want to upgrade my sound system with this receiver I am currently using an LG Blu-ray player with surround sound do I have to have a powered sub in order for it to work my subwoofer I have Now does not have RCA jacks it has bare wire what do I do can I splice or do I have to purchase a powered sub thank

cannot answer this properly without model numbers of the receiver and sub. from what you are describing though, you'll need a powered sub.

If the subwoofer output of the receiver is powered then you can use a speaker to line level converter like this one

and connect a self powered subwoofer. You only use one channel of it.
