Do I need an hdtv converter box with a smart tv and using an hd antenna

Solution
Ya, that's pretty much incorrect info you were given.
The converter boxes are for, as you said, converting..specifically from Digital to Analog in order to work with older TV's that have NTSC tuners. You should be fine connecting directly. The converter won't give you more channels..it all depends on how good the signal is that the antenna is picking up.

Not sure what make/model TV you have, but pretty much any smart tv should accept the antenna by connecting it directly to the threaded coax fitting on the back. The TV's built-in ATSC tuner can receive Over-The-Air HD antenna channels.

I was told if I used the antenna and the converter box I would get more channels. But I see the box is used to convert digital to analog. I have a vizio 32" smart tv. Forget the model number. But just got last week.
