You can opt-in to use different engines e.g. Avira but because it was using these engines and not the default engines they were classed as "cheating". So they weren't really cheating, they were simply using features of their antivirus that are opt-in.

I currently work on my campus in the IT department and am pursing an IT career and we always use a combination of Avast and Malwarebytes. There is also a French AV that I can't remember the name of to save my life, but its the best I've ever used hands down.

I personally used to use AVG, but then it became too intrusive. Then I ran both Avast free and premium, both of which were great. I also ran a premium version of Kapersky which was the best in my opinion. I currently run Malware Bytes premium which is doing well. I know Panda works quite well and Avira isn't too bad.

For those of you not running an AV in today's world are ballsy, ignorant people. Goodluck haha.

EDIT: AVG Rescue disc is the best I've used as far as rescue/linux bootables go.

hey all poorguy is back from having a total hip replacement so that is why I have not been around.

anyway just thought I would let it known that I am still using the panda antivirus free 2015 and it is doing a really good job of keeping my desktop safe. not a thing has slipped past only a few attempts. it does seem to give out some false positives but I would rather deal with that then wonder if it is really checking for anything. no complaints at all.

hope everyone is having a great day.

On the Contrary... Oh wait nevermind.. I was going to say Avast is a resource hog, till I checked again and Realized it was Chrome.. The only reason I use chrome is because of the toms hardware addon that lets me easily check unread threads..
Avast has saved my old computer many times, and I'm reluctant to leave it.

@thepoorguy
Surgeries are the worst. Thankfully, I haven't had to have any.

About Chrome - I still havent found another browser to perform as good as it with flash extensions (correct me if there is). FF still seem to be a bit slower in that field and they both use about same resources

Avast might be good...I personally never had a good experience with it

yep I agree but I am now able to walk again without all of the pain.

chrome is resource hog. I use opera it is pretty fast and it doesn't have google sniffing out everywhere that you search. I stopped using google along time ago, just to damn nosey.

as far as antivirus I have 1 paid kapersky and several different free ones and panda free seems to be 1 of my best liked free ones. may get a few false hits but at least that tells me it is working and it is always updated and doesn't use a ot of resources.

Honestly, Avast sucks for overall real world applications. The whole "hardened mode" is most likely a heuristics engine that doesn't really do too much other than make you feel like a bad ass. It's like the "Auto Fonzie" button, or something. I would never install that <mod edit> on any computer.

Did nobody even see the half-assed "article" on Forbes about this? Two guys, funded by DARPA, hacked the CAN network, and released everything opensource for anyone to help debug, fuzz, and find new holes in security, for two different cars. Check out their DEF CON 21 video or the video they did with Forbes. They spent many hard hours to hack these cars, and to make a program that allows easier control over the whole network, but this was announced at the DC21 conference a couple years ago (DC23 is this August).

While MBAM is a good program to have, Qihoo is probably the worst AV to have, outside of lab test results.

Quite honestly, while I'd be willing to bet this is the "issue," I'm willing to bet there are two different versions that Qihoo is dealing out. You have a consumer version, which is released to the public; and then you have one that is used internally, and released to the labs. Something like that, but there has been way too much shady shit published about Qihoo to believe this is something so simple.

The controversy isn't over, and it may shed some light on things, depending on what the consumer version has (or doesn't have).

Have you done a virus or malware test on Avast free AV especially on hardened mode? Do you have any facts from "general" everyday home users that what you say is true? Of course in the business world...I would not recommend Avast

Please don't take this as an insult or me being mean but just curious questions just wanted to be answered :)

Avast and AVG were the two antivirus programs recommended for the diehards who want to stick with windows XP.
as I anm not using Xp anymore, I have Microsoft Security Essentials for 1 of my computers, and Norton 360 for the other 6, plus spybot,Search and Destroy (Free) s adjunct to take care of any Trojans.
