Are you using the phone as a hotspot for the tablet? If it was setup that way, then yes, the data would go from your cell phone connection to the tablet. Is the tablet using shared data with the same plan as the phone? It may have been using data when not on the WiFi signal. If you look at the details of your data use on the phone it will tell you what category used the data, videos, app downloads, etc..
