does speakers need to be connected in one is powered

I have a new turntable, a 2 channel Sony stereo receiver, and 2 bookshelf speakers...one of which is powered. I can't get the powered speaker to work...are the speakers supposed to be connected by speaker wire and if so how do I connect the speakers to the stereo?

A stereo receiver will power 2 unpowered PASSIVE speakers, it's not for self-powered speakers.

U can use self-powered speakers but must connect to receiver's PRE-OUT, if it exists.
