Done With Dell

I can't believe that they will not offer the WM5.0 upgrade for the Axim
X30h. It is definitely not a hardware compatible decision...this is based
on pure greed. The decision may result in a certain spike in short-term
sales for those who can afford to upgrade hardware after owning it for 3
months, but the rest of us will feel spurned and will buy anything but Dell
the next time we need PDAs, printers, computers, monitors, LCD TVs, etc.

Well...already had to have my credit card company intervene when it took
them more than 60 days to refund a returned item...now this. Yup...I'm
pretty much done with Dell.

Jeff,

While I can understand your frustration, this has been a pretty common thing
for most of the P/PC OEMs out there. Most of them only offer these types of
upgrades on their high end units - and even then some don't offer them at
all. Although it isn't a direct comparison, very few upgrades were offered
on WM2K3SE.

I guess my point is that it isn't just Dell.

Regards,

Not necissarily. However the lack of upgrate to MW2005
doesn't truly leave you out in the cold...you've still
got a heck of a PPC!! - just my opinion.

If you are buying an hx2110, hx2420, hx2750, or hx4700, then yes.

Nope. Looks like the 6315 is orphaned. Makes me really glad to be an early
adopter of a converged device. I am just wondering what excuse HP will
offer. My money is on a contract issue with T-Mobile.

This is standard Dell fare....they would offer the Second Edition upgrade to
X50 owners and hide very well the upgrade path from 2002 to 2003 (thought
they did offer this upgrade).

Dell offered a 2002 to 2003 upgrade for the X5. The X3 sold with 2003 and
did not get an SE upgrade. Both the X30 and X5 sold with 2003 SE from the
beginning. The X50, their latest offering is being offered an upgrade to
WM2005.

If you look at any other OEM, the record is similar, but at different times
with different models. No OEM is a guarantee of OS upgrades. Most everyone
has a fairly decent record of maintenance upgrades though. To paraphrase an
old Buddhist pearl... to raise your contentment, lower your desires ;)

Did they ever even HINT that the upgrade would be available? No? Then you
paid for
a WM 2003 device and that's what you got. If you bought it gambling on an
upgrade
then you lost. I don't see a problem with Dell there.

Toshiba did the same thing on their E740. Folks, including myself, were
quite pissed, and for good reason. The 2002 OS couldn't do much with the
new CPU, making this unit as slow or slower than older, cheaper units. That
OS also had issues with wireless, and it was fairly buggy.

Now I have a Dell, paid much less for it than the Toshiba, and it works much
better right out of the box.

The point is you can expect the same thing from other brands, especially HP,
who has absolutely no idea what Product Support is all about.

Yep, Here we go, my nice ipaq 5450 is going to be not supported again, Why
should I buy a higher end PDA knowing that it will support the next OS, then
Compaq/HP screw their users. I have a 48mb flash on this unit and that will
never be used....

A 5 year old PC from them will get support for Windows XP, drivers, bios
updates and even the software that you can order through them, but, they
won't support a 2 year old PDA....or even a year and 1/2 old one....that
could more than support it....

Just ticks me off....

Then feel free to stay with them. I on the other hand expect more from
people who get significant payments of my money. No one 'hinted' that I
would be able to upgrade my computer's OS, but alas...I could do it. I
didn't 'gamble', it just makes sense to me that a new device that can handle
a upgrade get that upgrade. If you expect less, then you can continue to be
the happy recipient of poor customer relations.

and how many times have you been able to update your cell phone, dvd player,
toaster or microwave. I agree in part with what your saying, and was upset
when HP didnt offer an upgrade to 2003se for my PPC and am happy that Dell
is offering an upgrade for my X50, but in the end, I paid for the devices
because of what they could do when I bought them, not based on what they may
or may not do in the future.

When I bought the h2210 I was comforted by the news that it will be
offered a ROM upgrade to 2003SE and consequently didn't worry about
having to wait for the 2003SE devices; I'm sure about this, it wasn't
something I heard from a salesman, it was all over the net. HP, though,
having already bought it, apprently changed their mind a little later
on.

I would suggest anyone considering a current model who wants 2005 to
NOT trust them.

People don't seem to realise that it actually may be due to hardware
limitations that 'older' PPC such as the X30h are unable to be
upgraded to WM5.0

One of the new features of WM5.0 is a radical change in memory
management - using ROM for program storage, and RAM purely for running
programs. The X50V has 128MB ROM, but I presume that the X30H only
has 64MB ROM, which would leave no room to store programs (except for
memory cards I suppose).

Jason - the low end X50 has the same ROM as the x30.
