Most Linux operating systems can boot a machine from a Live CD or a USB flash drive.

Download one of your choice - Mint is a good one for starters - and use Rufus or similar to make a bootable flash drive or ImgBurn to make a bootable CD.

They can both run a computer without impacting on the installed system.

If your Laptop boots into DOS (the black screen with C:\ prompt), you are already booted. What you probably ask is how to install another OS, and you don't need DOS for that - @Saga gave you some options.
