I have a Tivo2 and my phone line is about 20 feet away. I dont want to spend
$60-$70 to put in a phone jack at the Tivo. What is the frequncy of the
downloads? Once a week, a month??

Daily, if it's plugged in. Otherwise, you would be best connecting at
least once a week. Guide data will last for about 2 weeks, but 'running
out' is never good.

Other options:

-Do you have a home network? You can pick up a cheap USB to Ethernet
adapter (check Tivo.com for a list of approved adapters) and get guide
data that way. If you already have a wireless network, you may even be
able to find an inexpensive wireless adapter.

-They make things called "Wireless Modem Jacks" that basically 'make' a
phone jack wherever there's power. You might be able to find one for an
acceptable price. (Skip ones that are only called "Wireless Phone Jacks"
-- they may not support a modem, like the TiVo.)

I have a DirecTivo, plugged into a (currently malfunctioning) phonejack. It
pops up with a nag screen once a day, but has no visible side effects. We're
currently on day 60-something of not making a phone call, and other than the
nag screen, there's no problem with it. Guide data doesn't seem to be
affected (although with DirecTV, I believe the guide data is downloaded from
the satellite, not the phone). YMMV.

You will have no problems with a DTivo, unless you order a lot of PPV,
in which case at some point you will have to either phone home or pay
the bill via the internet. Beyond that the phone line does nothing.

That explains why everything is A-OK, then. Thanks.

Spend $6-7 and get a freaking phone cord. 20 feet is nothing.

Spend nothing. Every TiVo I've opened came with a phone cord and a
splitter.

Go to Radio Shack and spend $5-10 on a 25 foot phone cord and a splitter.

Normal update cycle (TV program information) is about every 30 hours. Code
updates occurs every once in a while. In my case (since I haven't requested a
priority on TTG), my last service update was in December. My second TiVo,
which I got in late December hasn't had any service updates, just program
updates.

Nothing's inaccessible, just inconvenient. Short of being in a situation
like a high-rise condo with concrete walls, that is.
