DVD and Surround set up

I have Sony dvd player with component outputs and optical audio output. I have Samsung Tv with component inputs. I also have awesome older Marantz SR19 with component inputs, outputs and optical inputs. I have hooked up the optical audio from the dvd player to the SR 19, but is there an issue if I run the Dvd player components right to the tv instead of through the SR 19? Seems like a waste of cables and time. Am I missing something?

No. There won't be a problem. The only thing is you will have to switch video sources on the TV and audio sources from the Marantz. Not a problem if the DVD player is the only thing you have hooked up. But for multiple sources, say a console, TV and DVD having everything hooked to the Marantz (which I assume is a reciever) will mean you only have to turn on the TV. After that you can easily switch between devices using the Marantz.

Excuse the late reply and thanks for your reply as I was out of town and had to deal with weather issues when I returned. Your answer was dead on. Tried it and my initial thought was correct as was your affirmation. My next issue is to find a way to convert some composite and/or component outputs to HDMI so I can use the HDMI's on my Samsung tv as my Marantz SR 19 has NO HDMI ports. I know the easy way is to buy a new receiver, but i am hoping to stay married and use the one that I have which cost a small fortune when I bought it.

If you TV has multiple HDMI inputs and a optical out, the best thing to do is to run all equipment to the the TV and a single optical cable to the marantz. IF you DVD player does not have HDMI, a new DVD player may be in order. (should be a lot cheaper then a new reciever)

For what you would like to do, just search either (composite to hdmi) or (component to hdmi) at amazon.com. There are plenty of converters available. Just be careful and make sure you get one that also does audio if you need it.

Again, excuse the late reply. I have to spend more time at home instead of traveling all over the place! You confirmed what I thought. I hate the thought of giving up my Marantz (and losing $1700 receiver), but sometimes my brain hurts from trying to do workarounds as it doesnt have HDMI inputs or outputs and my new tv shares composite and component inputs which i think is bizarre. The green input subs as the AV input and I have to disconnect the blue and red if I want av from my Marantz. Cannot understand how samsung could do that.
