Solution
The DVD drive may have become partially disconnected.
Hold the opposite edge of the laptop firmly, then give the outer edge of DVD drive a firm push inwards (do not hit it, just a firm push).

I have observed this before on laptops I've been given to repair. Usually happens with laptops that lead a very active life, being thrown into laptop bags every week and generally treated with less care than they should be.
