The statements by EA execs in this article are worrying to me. Whenever a publisher, especially EA, says they want to 'grow the audience' they mean that they intend to water down the unique elements that made the original game distinct, engaging and challenging. They mean that they intend to cash in on the success of the original game by pumping huge amounts of money into marketing the next 'blockbuster' instalment. Subtle yet poignant social and political commentary, such as that delivered by the original game, has no place in such a title. Neither does challenging game mechanics which are rewarding only after a steep learning curve. The narrative also gets dumbed down where stereotypes and trite plot devices abound. Innovation is risky, especially for a large company and with a product attempting to fill rather large shoes. So here is what I advocate we all do: Do not pre-order this title. Do wait for a good chunk of reviews to emerge after launch. This way we might, ever so slightly, let EA know that they need to create a decent game FIRST before exploiting the successes of past titles, titles held dear by many gamers.
