man that sounds like a wicked fun project to work on. the accelerometer can't be used to track speed accurately, just tilt and bursts of motion, so it would have to be connected to some sensors somehow. I don't think it would be that hard to have custom software, maybe even through the iphone OS, but I'm just guessing. I'd like to talk to the engineers who worked on this.
