What happened was that Hollywood companies (wealthy) were pressuring (buying off) congress. Then other large companies (ie Google) stepped in and complained. This pressured congress to rethink their "take away freedom one bill at a time" strategy.

Wasn't this government founded because we didn't like another oppressing power (England)? And now, the corporations ARE the oppressing power? wtf? I wouldn't be at all surprised if the corporations try to sneak this in when no one's looking, perhaps as a part of another bill. The internet is fine as it is. Piracy is just a cost of business, and they need to learn to live with it. The world doesn't revolve around big corporations' interests.

"Unintended consequences"

You mean how League for Gamers was formed? It would be a pretty bad consequence if your developers left for a more independent group and realized they didn't need you as much as you make it seem. Better back it up and get them back while you still can.

The biggest flaw with the war on piracy is the people who are fighting it. Why is it that the blue collar American worker and struggling artist are supposed to be the ones hurt by piracy but the only ones fighting it are corporate fatcats, unnecessary associations, and class action lawyers?

Dude USA has been changing since Reagan. As others have said, they WILL pass this bill conceal in another bills. The people from USA is very aware of what's happening and are reacting which means that at some point or another Civil War will break in the USA, simply because big ol' corporations will not back down from trying to have more control of their profits.

Unfortunately, it's starting to look more and more like a revolution will become a necessary action to stop the downward spiral. We fought England for our freedom because we were tired of their oppressive rule....nor, our own government is trying to oppress us. The government has bailed out everyone but those that actually need it. Why is this? To increase their control. The government, banks and big corporations control the money and thus control us. The government is only doing what's necessary to prevent a full blown depression....nothing more, nothing less. So long as banks and big business keep showing profits, they have to reason to work towards improving the economy. Now that they've taken away financial freedom from so many....it's time to move on and work towards taking more away from us. Eventually, we won't have any alternative but to start taking it ALL back.

The corporations are not the oppressing power. If the corporations make any move to harm the well being of third parties or consumers in ways the government does not protect, they face liability in court.
The government is the thing we must always carefully examine for oppression. "Corporations" or the "Wealthy" do not have more power, only more resources than the "unwealthy" or "common man" to operate with. If they operate outside of the law imposed by the government, they risk the repercussions of those negatively affected; which is how we, the "common man" are protected. Briefly put, "Corporation" can only oppress as much as the government gives it license to; oppression without protection can be very costly to a Company.
This system operates quite well as long as the laws are enforceable and just, neither are accomplished by SOPA/PIPA. If lobbying did play a big part in the conception of this bill, that is no excuse for the majority's inability to elect good leaders. We need to focus on the government and her role, the Corporations will fold to whatever our will is, as the ESA just demonstrated today.

[citation][nom]v3nom777[/nom]How are we supposed to elect good leaders if the only people who can be elected are inherently the bad leaders?[/citation]

Push for 'non of the above' to be included on election forms.
Unlikely to happen without A LOT of support, but it's a sure way of letting them know that we're sick of self serving politians doing their jobs to serve themselves, not their constituents or humanity as whole.

Other large companies (ie Google) stepped in and pushed a couple more stacks of $100 bills to congressman than the media companies were giving*

if the usa is still doing this crap in 2022, the election year after that write in me, i wouldn't be the best presidential choice, but i will at least be better than people who are bought and paid for by corporations.

ESA and game publishers should be real careful how they tread. There's a new industry growing with Valve and their Steam leading the way, and if they don't treat developers and their customers right, they could find themselves out of business before even the other entertainment conglomerates that are also hanging by a thread that gets thinner every day.

In some sense you are correct, prior to the financial crisis of 2008 this bill may very well have been passed and it may have happened without much notice. Pre 2008 corporate and legislative power could almost do anything without any real treat of the general public using their power, the 2008 heist have opened up the general publics eyes and the corporations and the government can no longer do what they like. Some of the corporations and government is still in a pre 2008 mindset, they need to snap out of it or congressmen and women will lose their seats and some companies may loose a lot of money.
