I am considering buyer a mixer to use with my computer . I am unable with my
current set up to record a fresh track while monitoring a track (play along)
without overdubbing onto the same . I have looked at the behringer
/euroracks and the price is certainly attractive . But , are they any good
and are they clean(any noise or bleed thru ? ) ? If you have one and have
had probs or compliments I would like to hear them . I am looking at the
Eurorack UB502 .

Behringer mixers are clean, meaning low noise and crosstalk etc, but the
preamps and EQ's can certainly be improved upon, though generally not for
less than 3x the price. If it's just for hobby recording it will serve you
well.

for the money, they are fine. Personally I prefer Allen & Heath, but
they are pricier...

A mixer won't fix that problem. You need software that's capable of
recording on multiple tracks AND you need to know how to do it.

They're OK, as we say, for the money. They're just fine for monitoring
while you're recording, and if your budget is low enough so that you
can only afford a Behringer, the mic preamp may be better than
whatever you're using now.

But your real problem with overdubbing, if I understood your
description, is more fundamental.

They work fine, mostly, initially. I installed two UB802's in a dance
studio in August '04, and one of them is starting to crackle and pop at
the master output volume pot. Note these are in use at least ten hours a
day, seven days a week.

I just got one of those for a church install. It doesn't have phantom
power, if that matters to you.

If you are recording from mics and you use the Behringer B-1 mics, the
preamps in the Euro consoles are just fine. We use several Behringer
products and they work well beyond their price range.

Hank -

The UB802 is one of most popular models. Even though it is an affordable
solution, we fully expect it to meet your requirements - even if it is to be
in operation 10 hours per day.

Please drop me a line at the office and we'll get you taken care of
immediately.

This is a FAQ from users of multitrack software - Cubase etc. It's
quite likely that the initial problem is down to having chosen "What
You Hear" as record source in his soundcard's mixer applet. That
needs sorting out.

But when you want to input microphones and line sources, monitor
inputs plus already-recorded tracks, switch between cans and speakers,
etc. an external mixer is highly convenient. And one that offers
at least a rudimentary second output bus is even more convenient.
The one he mentions will do the job.

Thanks, Jim. The studio owner's first move is to talk to the GC right in
the same mall with her dance studio. I'll hear back from her shortly.

<g> Yes, I've had that happen before, and believe me, it is very much
appreciated.
