EV 635a and then some

I've been using a pair of 635a's as room mics recently for 2 track
rehearsal recordings. I started using them because they're the only
pair of omni's I've got and I'm not worried about them being knocked
over. I was suprised by how much I liked them though - even with the
lack of highs and lows. Are there any omni dynamics with a bit more
extension on the top and bottom?

The absolute best is the RE-55 which is sort of like a 635A with bottom
end.

The problem wih the RE-55 is that it's both much more delicate than
the 635A, and discontinued. But it is really an amazing-sounding
dynamic.

Shure made a bunch of high grade omni dynamics, none of which have
been in the catalogue for twenty years.

Wasn;t there an AUDIO TECHNICA re55-copy?
Most of their early dynamics are still in the list I think... Worth a look.

Not dynamics, but the best omni I've found lately for all kinds of
stuff is the Avenson STO-2. $500 matched pair... more than 635 for
sure... but worth it IMO

The EV 655, which I believe is the predecessor to the RE-55, was a very
smooth omni dynamic, with lots of top end and pretty fair bottom. It
sometimes shows up on Ebay.

I believe these folks are using the same capsule that Earthworks is.

Yes that's correct Scott, Panasonic capsules. But the Avensons
(formerly called Stapes) are way less costly than EW. And the sound is
exceptional, just about the "real-est" tones I've heard. Very flat
frequency response.
