im just wondering if i could get an external video card on this laptop... its kinda new so i was hoping i could but i dont want to go into it if i didnt have aproval from some experts... i was looking to place a high end gpu like a gtx 970

Not a viable solution since an Expresscard slot is required and it is more or less extinct since they are only available on a few business laptops. That solution would also bottleneck a GTX 970.

There was some gimmick way a few years back, an external PCI lane through a USB port with an external PSU. But it didnt really work, and the lane itself cost nearly 150 bucks.

In short, no. It cant be done.

there is actualy a way for you to upgrade since it is a lenovo y510p gaming laptop, you can use a device called lenovo ultrabay... youll have to remove the cd drive in order to install an ultrabay gpu ...

you are lucky,not many ppl get to upgrade their laptops gpu.. i think lenovo is the only company that has such a solution
 
The only laptop that can utilise a desktop GPU would be the Alienware 13 and the external GPU house that comes offered with it. otherwise no, you can't. without some serious tech know-how
You can't use an ultrabay slot since you've already got SLI running.

* Mother Board = Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 (AMD 990X, DDR3, 3xPCI-Exp 16x, USB3, Sata3)

If you are Intel users, You can build :
* CPU = Intel Core i3 4150 (3.5 Ghz, 2 Cores) L3 Cache 3 MB (BOX) (54 Watts) OR
* CPU = Intel Core i5 4570 (3.2 Ghz, 4 Cores) L3 Cache 6 MB (BOX) (84 Watts)
* GPU = MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V 4 GB 256 Bit DDR5
* Mother Board = Asrock Z87 Extreme4 (Intel Z87, Vga, DDR3, 3xPCI-Exp SLI 16x)

I'm only suggesting the "Important" parts for a computer, Both of those suggestions costs you about $570 - $700 USD (excluding HDD, RAM, PSU, Casing)
Oh, Since that GTX 970 eat lot of power, you will need a 550 - 650 Watts Power Supply.
