external monitor and laptop lid

i have an external monitor connected to my lenovo x220. i want only the sceen on the laptop to go off when the ex monitor is connected. right now the screen stays on when i'm using the external monitor. how is this accomplished?

Fn and a f key that has a monitor image. (I think fn-f7)
