facebook cares more about its own expansion than its users... or better yet lets call them customers since they are what keep facebook running

Are you people kidding me? Anyone who has a problem with Facebook needs to remember you have the option of NOT USING IT. Just like some of "reminded" me that I do not have to read and post comments on Tom's. Not that I needed to be reminded but still... get a GRIP.

LOL! This reminds me of a form letter that was sent out from a company I worked for years ago. Someone, somehow managed to not only write up but send out hundreds of these form letters that SHOULD have said "Dear Mr. or Mrs....Our records show you have demonstrated a desire......", but INSTEAD it said "Dear Mr. or Ms.....Our records show you have demons..." Well that did not go over to well.

[citation][nom]kutark[/nom]Right, because this is facebook's fault for adding a useful feature, and not the people who create facebook pages for dead people. I'm sorry, but i have friends pages for deceased friends and facebook did exactly what they talked about in the article. Did i whine about it? no, i realized that facebook is *gasp* not a living entity and that it is in fact *gasp* code on a machine.Seriously, this is like whining that facebook suggested you be friends with some person who you just happen to hate, and they're supposed to magically know that you hate that person and should never have ruined your mood by suggesting you friend that person.[/citation]

kutark i agree with you. While it is unfortunate that facebook is reminding people to reconnect with people who have passed on, facebook is not at fault. FB isnt responsible for the persons death or the pain that comes with it. FB simply uses a code and posts it on your page. I'm sorry for your loss everyone, I have lost friends who still have an active FB page too, but you cant blame the messenger.

Exactly, you use a service in which you dont have access to the code. You certainly have the option to use the service you dont pay for anyway.

Memorable quote!

Back on the topic, I agree with kutark here. Facebook is a machine, it can't know who's dead or alive. If no one takes the time to inform the admins of a user passing away, things like that are bound to happen. I think memorialization is a good feature and, while it could have been done earlier, it's never too late to do a good deed.

[citation][nom]Dandalf[/nom]Facebook and it's un-needed, uncalled for changes that everyone hates and no one likes. Can you imagine if they ran a country??[/citation]
I take it you were planning on living forever, then?

[citation][nom]haunted one[/nom]If I haven't contacted someone on FB in ages then that's because I probably prefer to leave it that way. I remember the people important to me, and don't need FB to do it for me.[/citation]
Amen.

Non-sense. One of my college friends died a few years ago and after I contacted Facebook with newspaper article linked with her demise they deleted her account.

I plan on it :) but then again we all know not all plans work :/

?
Ok, say Zed died six months ago
If -

a) facebook knows I haven't contacted John for six months ('cause Zed's dead) then surely-

b) facebook must know Zed hasn't updated or visited his facebook page for six months, so -

c) a simple check to see if the person they suggest you reconnect with is still using facebook before making the suggestion would seem to solve all these problems.

This is the part where it is important to leave things like old Emails, Logins, Facebook / myspace pages passwords ect. left behind in wills or accessible to loved ones or next of kin so they can maintain these "digital memorials". After dealing with the death of my dad and helping my mom go through all his accounts trying to get things updated/switched/cancelled these digital remains are so easily forgotten. Thats why I instructed my family with instructions to my "master list" of logins as well as wishes.

I just gotta figure out what should be my last facebook status update when i pass on... don't want my last update to be "left on an airplane to africa, BRB" as well as leaving my lame myspace page as it is.

Oh gawd and the warcraft toons,,, i've should consider where all my gold should be sent to as well as where my character should lay before the final "log off" / name delete

I agree with some of you, facebook us just a big load of code with some nice interface. so it cannot account for dead people. On the ohter hand, I also agree with the guys that "facebook should do something" like taking into consideration the amount of post the person writes, login frequency, all those elements should account to exclude their suggesting to the living ones.

oh and BTW, i wouldnt get scared if a dead person get suggested as a contact. I Would really get scared like hell, if the person POKES ME !!

The worst thing that could happen to someone is to get an answer from a memorialized profile!!! With the code of FB I think it could happen.

Anyway, let us be healthy and happy, in order to remember our friends who aren't with us anymore. And let FB does what it does.
