Feedback on eBay: When?

Hi all

Well, I'm in the midst of selling a bunch of things on eBay,
and while I was at it, I decided to pick up a few things as
well. I'm not a "power seller", but I do my fair share of
transactions on there as both a buyer and seller.

Well, I just bought a CD, and paid for it right away. The
seller says that they'll leave feedback for me "Upon successful
completion of the transaction". Now, when I'm the seller, I leave
feedback as soon as the buyer pays, even if I haven't shipped
the item, because once they pay, that person's obligation to me
is complete. The above practice, to me, seems like "Well, I'll
leave good feedback for you, but I want to see what you write
about me first."

What do you all think?

I definitely hate it... It's like "You can trust me to send me
money, but I don't trust that you'll like my item well enough
to leave me good feedback". Who loses most? It's obviously
the buyer.

Oddly enough, a recent problem auction I ran into was from a
seller who said the same thing. I should have seen it as a
warning...

And as a buyer you lose what exactly?

So you don't receive feedback immediately, big deal. I think if you view
the seller's feedback record, and see whether or not they do leave
feedback, (in most cases sellers do leave more than they receive, some
times by a large margin. My main account is short my more than 250
feedback becuase of buyers who don't follow up on it) then you would
think it silly to believe that the seller would personally hold some
sort of grudge against you & not leave feedback.

I find it interesting when buyers hold feedback, because they are
worried they won't receive any. I've even had buyers email me and get
all upset over their feedback, bordering on pestering, then come to find
out, they themselves have not posted me any. Arrogant busybodies they
are! :p

I don't think it matters much either way, who leaves first. There are
advantages to waiting from a seller's standpoint. As a buyer though,
there really isn't anything holding you from posting it once you've
received an item in satisfactory condition.

And yes blind feedback would be interesting to see implemented, but
still that does not get to the root of the problem. Most people don't
try to communicate first, they immediately jump in & post neg or neu
comment, & then after a $20 fee it's worked out. It's ridiculous.

When is eBay going to switch to blind feedback where it doesn't show up
until both parties have left their feedback? (Ha, ha!)

I usually leave good feedback as soon as someone pays. If I get a weird
vibe from the buyer, though, I might wait until they get the product and
give their "approval" of it before I'll leave anything. I bet there is
nothing more annoying that leaving some shmoe a good feedback after paying,
only for him to get an item he wasn't expecting, and then dropping a
negative bomb on your record.

But, really... once I got past 100 feedback points, I don't really care if
people leave me good feedback or not. But yeah, a friendly reminder for
someone to leave you a good feedback shouldn't be too offensive to anyone if
you really want them to leave it for ya.

As a seller, I used to leave feedback for a buyer as soon as they paid.
I've changed that approach, though, because of several bad experiences
I've had.

My first negative feedback was given to me by a guy who got mad because
it took me two whole days to ship his CDs. He had no problem with the
CDs themselves, just the fact that I took two days to send them.
Nowhere did I state that I shipped on the same day payment is received,
nor did he ask me if I would do such a thing.

I've gotten two other negative feedbacks from shipments that were lost
in transit. In both cases the buyers did not want insurance, but felt I
was to blame when the things they bought didn't arrive.

After those experiences I decided I wouldn't leave feedback for anyone
until they picked up/received what they bid on and were satisfied.

It's just common sense to wait until the bidder leaves feedback. As soon
as you send the item the transaction IS NOT over. The item must reach
the bidder, and the bidder must be satisfied. Then depending on the
shipping terms and the auction details, it can be determined if the
bidder has a legitimate complaint.

Sorry I wasn't being clear. I'm not talking about losing anything.
I'm saying, I took the first risk. If he takes my money, I lose
that. That's why I think the seller should post the first feedback.
The first phase is complete. Then I leave feedback when the item
is received. We both have an opportunity to remark on the feedback
left after all. Do it in order is all I'm saying.

I always wait to hear from the buyer that they have received and are
satisfied with the item before posting feedback. I don't care if I
post before the buyer (if they post at all), but just because I seem
to have the money doesn't mean the buyer won't try, in one of various
ways, to screw me over. Yes, they might still try to cheat me after
saying "thanks" for the item, but that has not happened to me yet.
