Occasionally on my laptop I will hear the fans ramp up and Firefox will choke. This is seemingly random, and CPU usage by Firefox is only going up to 25%. Typing is impossible, scrolling is impossible, doing anything in Firefox is impossible. I have 16GB of RAM and only have around 10 tabs open.

What on earth is causing this? Should I just start using Chrome? (I really don't want to)

This ONLY happens on my laptop.

Did you install firefox 32 bit or 64 bit. With 32 bit this means it's dumping unused stuff out of it's max allowed 3.85 gb of ram it can use to not go over a limit. This is when cpu useage spikes for a couple of seconds and the browser gets laggy.

It's 32 bit, but RAM usage doesn't go over a GB most of the time.
