I have heard in the past in this news group that verizon may or is going to
have a feature when you dial *228 and be able to get the firmware updated on
the phone. Is this true or just talk??? I have a LG 4400 phone with ver 10
firmware and I had to go to the Tri - County Cincinnati verizon store to get
it updated. I have done that twice once from ver 04 to ver 08 and then from
08 to 10. The same tech did it doth times. When I was last in there to get
my firmware updated he told me that he would charge me next time I come in
to get that done. Are they allowed to do that? The Verizon tech support( Not
local support) encourages users to get your phone firmware updated when a
new version is out. More features and the phone works better to. I have
noticed a big difference since I have switched from ver 04 to 08 and then to
version 10.

I don't think you will ever see this. While technically possible, using
the wireless link to download a firmware upgrade is too failure
prone. Certainly it would be possible for the phone to completely
download a new image and verify its integrity before switching
over to boot from it but this is quite a bit of overhead both in
complexity, development, and memory resources for something
so infrequent.

Even the manufacturers ate charging for Firmware upgrades, unless phone has
a distinctive problem covered under warranty. Unfortunately, too many people
feel that the second a new firmware is released for a phone "They Just Gotta
have It". That makes for a great demand on their technical departments and
resources. Just think, if every person wanted the latest firmware everytime
its released, what it would entail to handle that kind of volume? Their
belief is you bought a phone that was warrantied to perform in such a way.
If your phone is, and they make improvements, beyond what you purchsed, then
you should help offset the cost of that improvement as well as the cost to
install that improvement, by paying for it.While in many cases, new firmware
improves the performance of your phone, but the phone still wasn't broken or
defective before. In many cases the end user cant even see the diference.
Many others will tell you, when it comes to firmware, "if it aint broke,
dont fix it" Many electronic devices are moving that way. Example: some
Electronic Keyboard for PDAs are now charging for improved drivers. Think of
firmware for what it is, software. And we all know how long the average
piece of software gets upgraded for free. Answer, nowdays, not long.
Developers want, and should be paid for the improved, new versions of their
product (within their defined periods, of course)

The Dr offers: No. It is unlikely that you will see firmware updates via
the over-the-air process. Perhaps you're thinking about the OTA which
updates the roaming tables and enhanced roaming indicators on the phone. It
isn't so much about the technology or the bandwidth: it is more a problem
that a firmware incomplete may yield a "non working phone"... too much of a
risk, in my opinion.

Concerning a comment made by someone that firmware upgrades are for the
few.... that is incorrect. Firmware updates are "typically" to fix
problems, and will also usually include some improvements. I am not aware
of any "technical services people" who would discourage a firmware update
for any reason.

If a phone is working fine, even if an upgrade is available, suggest you
leave it as is.
If your phone is working poorly, do whatever it takes to get your firm to
current revision.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it; don't do a firmware upgrade on a perfectly
working phone, just to get a game.
