First console rpg?

I don't play rpg's. But I was delighted to inform my Nintendo
worshiping nephew that the first console rpg was not Dragon
Warrior on NES, but rather AD&D: Treasures of Tarmin on INTV! At
least according to the scribes at wikipedia. At this news, he
launches into a rage-filled lecture on how "console rpg" doesn't
mean "rpg on a console". Like I said, I don't play rpg's, but
from what I can determine, "console rpg" appears to mean "rpg's
produced by Japanese in a Japanese style".

So what do you consider the first console rpg? Where does Ultima
IV fit into this equation? It was released originally for
DOS/C64/Apple, but was later ported to the NES. And Dragon
Warrior sure does look a lot like it.

The closest to Japanese made RPG would be Phantasy Star for SMS. Came
out about the same time as Legend of Zelda but had elements of classic
RPG like xp points, levels, dungeon crawls, etc.

And a slight correction to your post: Ultima III came out on NES
before IV.

Yes, but Ultima IV for computer platforms (1985) came out before
Dragon Quest on the Famicom (1986). And it's DQ that console RPG
devotees claim is the start of the genre.
