Nobody wants to handle a hot phone or to have a source of heat in their pocket as they go about their daily lives. It’s also not very good for the hardware itself. A few early adopters of the S7 found the phone was getting quite hot, either while charging or when running on battery. To fix overheating errors on your Galaxy S7, do the following.
Hot while charging
It is to be expected that the phone will run a bit warm while charging whether you’re using wireless charging or not. The S7 uses two different fast charging technologies, Samsung's Adaptive Fast Charging and Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 tech for the chipset. These can occasionally cause issues. If your Galaxy S7 is running hot rather than just warm, try disabling fast charging:
1. Navigate to Settings, then Battery.
2. Disable Fast Cable Charging.
3. Recharge the phone and retest during normal use for a couple of hours.
If your Galaxy S7 is running hot during normal use, there could be an app or setting causing the processor to run constantly. CPU cycles generate heat which could be what you’re experiencing. Here’s how to check.
1. Navigate to Settings, Battery and then Battery usage.
2. Select More, then Optimize battery usage.
3. Select ‘All apps’.
4. Retest the phone over the next couple of hours.
By optimizing battery usage, you are preventing apps running constantly in the background. If this cools the handset down, it’s time to check those apps for compatibility. Remove them one at a time and retest, giving the S7 a chance to cool down between tests.
Finally, if those two steps don’t work, wiping the cache partition has helped a few users cool down their phone.
1. Power off your S7.
2. Press and hold volume up, home and power buttons until the Galaxy S7 logo appears on screen.
3. Select Wipe cache partition from the recovery menu by using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select.
4. Let the operation complete and reboot the phone.
This final step should remedy any overheating issues on the Galaxy S7. After all those steps, if the phone is still running hot it’s time to take it back to the store.
