Fortec Ultra Opinions

HI all. I'm thinking about buying a FTA receiver. Probably the Fortec Ultra.
I've never used an fta receiver before and would like to know what I can
expect to have to do once I buy this unit.
I assume I'll have to buy a dish for it also.
I understand I won't have any program guide.
I guess what I would like to know is if I just point the dish at a satellite
and do a scan on the receiver and that's it. Or do I need to move the dish
to other satellites from time to time.
I'm just not sure what to expect by going this route.

Don't buy any receiver until we see what DN does to the rest of there
programming.

So it's not worth getting an fta receiver unless you're using it for
DN? I was under the assumption that you could receive free, legal
programming.

Do you guys have dishes on a motor drive or anything fancy like that?
Or do you just have it pointed at one sat?

I have mine attached to a 1 meter Ku Dish on a SG2100 H to H motor. It
works well. I use a broad band (11.7 to 12.7 Ghz), .4 db noise figure LNB.
I have some tracking issues, but I believe it is an issue with the antenna.

i have mine hooked up to a bud (10ft c band dish and Ku), but you can get
away with smaller dishes for Ku only and you can park it on one satellite if
you like. there is lots of free stuff on g10r Ku.
http://www.lyngsat.com/america.html
lists a pretty much up to date list of what is around. don't buy for any
particular channel it maybe there today and gone tomorrow. you want to look
for DVB in the clear on the listings.

have fun, there is lots of stuff to look at.

I have mine hooked up to a 1 M ku band offset dish at the moment, but I did
have it hooked up to my C band dish at one time and will again one of these
days.

Well, it doesn't look like a C-Band dish is an option for me because of the
size. Can I use a small 18" - 24" KU band dish like the ones for dishnet or
bell expressvu?

No.The minimum size is 30",but you would best to use a 1 Meter Ku band band
dish. You have to remember that the DBS signals are more powerful, therefore a
smaller dish can be used. However, the ku band satellites used for regular
transmissions are not as powerful, thereby requiring a larger dish.

Thanks for that info. Would one lnb on a 3 meter dish be sufficient?
I'm considering using a motor drive...

Yes.You would need a standard 11.7-12.2 Ghz LNBF.

The other choice is a double,or triple lnbf holder,with 3 standard ku-band
lnbfs and pick 3 satellites close to one another.

Would a 33" dish and that particular lnb work with dishnet or expressvu
also?

Anthony,
In the scenario you've clarified, I'd say that a Winegard 30" would be
adequate as far as sizing. Since you subscribe to Expressvu, you may be far
enough north to make use of a larger dish which will improve reception of
DBS signals through precipitation that now causes noticeable fade and
pixelation. So a bigger dish is an investment in better signal reception and
should be worthy for that reason alone.
It seems to me that the decision facing you is which lnbf to use. It
seems someone mentioned in a recent post that there's a new one available
that can do both circular polarity and linear(v/h). If not then it becomes a
matter of mounting a separate feed for each polarity. The trick becomes
mounting each lnbf centered, for use with a motor. Most discussions about
using multiple feeds are generally referring to making the dish able to see
2(or more) birds at once with a fixed dish.
Perhaps a 90cm toroidal dish with separate lnbfs? You'd have to use a
reversed circular lnbf for DBS signals. A standard linear lnbf that fits the
mounting bracket could be used. You keep the dish count at 1, yet receive
multiple Ku birds(DBS or linear) without a motor. I don't recall what the
range of arc that dish has, but it should cover 82º(Nimiq-2) to
123º(Galaxy-10R). Buying that dish and a FTA receiver is probably gonna be
400-500US$ after tax and/or shipping.
Hope I haven't created confusion with these ramblings. Only you can
decide if you want to play with these toys, and whether or not it's worth
it.

Wishing you success

I'm not too up on these DBS forms, but while the dish might work, some of them
you need to have a DBS lnbf which is higher freq. and circular, not linear
polarization.

The way to do it,if you want to do that would be to,as I said, have 1
dish,with 3 lnbfs,2 DBS lnbfs pointing at Nimic 1 & 2 and a third standard
ku lnbf pointing at T5(L5) ku.

Run to receivers off of 1 dish...maybe.

Stator

To answer you questions, the Fortec Star ULTRA receiver is a good
quality blind search DVB receiver that has been on the market for over
2 years. Like the previous poster indicated, there are quite a few FTA
satellite channels available on satellites (G10R,T5,G3C,AMC3, and many
more).

Some forums you should visit to learn about this hobby:
http://www.satforums.com
http://www.sadoun.net
http://www.satelliteguys.us

These are good resources and legit forums.

I would recommend to you a motorized system instead of a stationary
one. For the simple reason that a motorized system will allow you to
scan and view channels from several satellites at a minimal additional
equipment cost.

If your budget is limited, you could start with a stationary system,
then when you feel comfortable with FTA and your system, you can add a
motor later.

The T90 toroidal dish suggestion is good. But keep in mind, that your
cost will be higher with the T90 because you will have to add a
separate LNBF for each satellite, switches, and LNBF brackets. Also,
the T90 has an arc span of no more than 40 degrees. So you will be
limited with what you can receive with it.

The motorized system will allow you to track from 100 to 140 degrees of
the arc, depending on what motor you get and your location (i.e. trees,
building, etc.)

Have fun and good luck.
