looking to get my son (hes 8) a cheap laptop |(because he's 8 and careless).
problem is no cheap laptop has good res.
Basically anything under $400 (which is all im spending) is 1366x768.
On a 13.3" screen is it really that bad?

Why a laptop at all, why not a desktop. Going by your title you are looking for the system to play Fortnite, that is not a very light weight game so you don't wan to be running in on a low end laptop. 768 resolution is fine for a laptop, an 8yr old won't care either way. Or get a used gaming laptop a few years old.

He plays on PS4, but this is for when he goes to a friends or whatever

I would check for used systems, something with an nVidia 960m should be available for about $400, maybe even less.
