free antivirus programs

tried two of the recommended supposedly free programs and they were a gyp. Not free at all, just free to download.
 
Solution
Avast, Kaspersky, Avira, Comodo, MAYBE Bitdefender and that would be pretty much it. Anything else I wouldn't trust. Also, make sure you are restarting your PC after installing antivirus software.

Avast is ok. It used to be great, now it's just ok. They try to sell you an upgrade, but the basic antivirus works.

I don't know what to say, works fine for me. You need to get the free version, and register, but registration is free.

Were you having this problem with Avast Free? I'd like to help if I can. What Windows version are you on, and can you post a screenshot of the error?
