freesat box sound

why does the sound from my freesat box sound normal on hd channels and very quiet on normal channels when the volume is at the same level

Volume differences from channel to channel are not unusual.
The HD channels are more likely to be transmitting Dolby Digital than the SD channels. It might vary from program to program too.
