Fully charged but only works when plugged in

My laptop is fully charged but won't turn on without being connected to the charger. If I connect it to the charger, turn it on and then disconnect the power cord, it goes to sleep. The screen will not come on unless it is connected to the charger. It is a new machine so I suspect the problem is user error but I am not certain. Any assistance offered would be appreciate.

I am guessing this laptop is pretty old?

Batteries only have a certain lifetime.
You can replace the battery if you can find a compatible replacement.

yeah, that's probably a battery issue. have it checked to be sure, but you would more likely need to get a new battery
