[citation][nom]gallidorn[/nom]I wouldn't be surprised if Sony didn't jump on the next "Next Gen" bandwagon. Their hardware is still relevant, but it would be nice if they decided to release an updated PS3 with the following features:Ultra Slim CaseLarger Hard DriveFaster (DDR3) Memory with Higher CapacityImproved Graphics This would get people to buy their console again.[/citation]

They don't need next-gen console with faster graphics/memory, because games for it would not be compatible. So far, there are no 4k x 2k TVs to drive, PS3 can play 3D, no new disk format to replace BD - so base PS3 specs are absolutely relevant.
But they absolutely have room to rework all electronics inside of PS3 into a single 28nm SoC (with memory as PoP), with passive cooling, smaller case... Update components which do not break compatibility - replace USB2 with USB3, 802.11g with 802.11n, HDMI 1.3b with 1.4, maybe 100Base-T with 1GbE, add choices of SSDs/larger HDDs... And drop cost (and price) in the process.

[citation][nom]nottheking[/nom]The Saturn wasn't truly the superior console of its generation. It WAS more potent than the PS1, provided one was able/willing to make use of all the hardware together. However, this, as I understand, required writing primarily in assembly, which for most is vastly more of a PITA than using high-level languages such as, say, C or C++, which were starting to be far more popular for the PS1, and one of the main factors that contributed to it having such a massive game library. [/citation]
Actually, Saturn was a failure of Sega. During the late development of Saturn, Sega learned that Sony PS1 was superior to the Saturn. Sega decided to add more features (that's why it had 9 different processors.) which were not on the original drawing board. This made Saturn to be one of the most difficult console for developers to program. For Dreamcast, Sega tried to put things right because they messed up with Saturn. At that time, the PS1 was the shining star in the console war, therefore I think Sega was paying attention to PS1 rather than N64.

[citation][nom]guardianangel42[/nom]As defined by who? You? Macs don't have upgradable hardware in almost all cases other than HDD or maybe RAM, does that mean they aren't PCs? Sure you can edit Bios settings more easily on a regular computer than on a console but you can upload your own OS to a console if you really wanted to.It would void warranty and get you banned from Xbox but you can do it.Are we only accounting for things that aren't hacks? The PS3 could be installed with Linux if you wanted to using its Other OS feature, does that count?Face it dude, you have no authority to define this category. Unless you have a source from an official, industry spanning entity then you can't honestly say you are right and I am wrong. For the record, consoles do so much of what PCs do now that the line is blurry. I can watch TV, sports, movies, youtube, browse the internet, edit videos (in some games), play games, music, and pictures, and much of what a PC can do. There are things I can't do yes, but this isn't the PS2/Gamecube era anymore. The line between PCs and consoles is very blurry right now and I bet it will only get blurrier, especially with Microsoft's push for integration with Windows 8, Windows Phone 7.5, and Xbox.[/citation]

Mac ≠ PC miss all those commercials?

Honestly, I can't see any good reason for a new set of consoles. Wii U makes a little more since because all it does is bring it's Wii/DS shtick to roughly the same technical level of all other gaming platforms and is what they should have made in the first place.
I mostly play PC and though the graphics can be better, they are not better to the point that we should shell out more for slightly better consoles. I think the next big innovation in gaming needs to be openess. We have as much graphical power as we need, we have motion controls. We have touch screens. We have cameras. The biggest way for games to improve now is to let as many minds as possible get their ideas onto what we have.

SONY might just be better off continuing making tvs, laptops, blu-rays and surround sounds to be honnest, because this generation with its "PS3" was very "meh"..... Microsoft will bury SONY in the ground next gen. Plus haven't they just lost like 2 billions or something a while ago? That can't be good news, even if it's not related with the PS3.... Plus most of SONY's exclusives sells like CRAP, Resistance 3, Twisted Metal, Starhawk? Oh and let's not forget the hacking of PSN in 2011.... WTF are you doing SONY ?? Cheap internet ready blu-ray player can go fck itsellf, XBOX is for real gamers pussies....
