[citation][nom]gallidorn[/nom]I wouldn't be surprised if Sony didn't jump on the next "Next Gen" bandwagon. Their hardware is still relevant, but it would be nice if they decided to release an updated PS3 with the following features:Ultra Slim CaseLarger Hard DriveFaster (DDR3) Memory with Higher CapacityImproved Graphics This would get people to buy their console again.[/citation]
They don't need next-gen console with faster graphics/memory, because games for it would not be compatible. So far, there are no 4k x 2k TVs to drive, PS3 can play 3D, no new disk format to replace BD - so base PS3 specs are absolutely relevant.
But they absolutely have room to rework all electronics inside of PS3 into a single 28nm SoC (with memory as PoP), with passive cooling, smaller case... Update components which do not break compatibility - replace USB2 with USB3, 802.11g with 802.11n, HDMI 1.3b with 1.4, maybe 100Base-T with 1GbE, add choices of SSDs/larger HDDs... And drop cost (and price) in the process.
