next week's headline, "Video Games Responsible for Global Warming!"

very possible if intel had continued the prescott p4..........

everyone knows that sunshine is the main source of vitamin D in the UK :eyesroll: urgh. of course Its not TV or movies, it must be video games. if someone is not getting enough D then take a pill

I went outside once, but the graphics weren't all that great.

Gaming is the pinball or pool of the new millenium. Starts with "G", rhymes with "T", which stands for "Trouble". (With apologies to Music Man)
Gaming is blamed for all the things that used to be blamed on pinball, pool, rock music, feminism, masturbation, etc. The same people that dump all over gaming, will sit and passively watch garbage "Reality TV" for hours and hours at a time, and then talk obsessively about it at work the next day. They lead shallow lives and NEVER actually participate in their own entertainment. Gaming at least requires you to participate and contribute to your own entertainment. How do YOU spend your leisure time?? Is reading a book more or less passive and inactive than playing a computer game?? Is planting your ass in front of the TV morally superior??
Gaming allows you to satisfy your need for adventure, excitement, and the universal human need to acquire cool stuff. Only when you acquire cool stuff in a game, no Malaysian child was exploited; no garbage was created; and you don't have to buy a bigger house to contain all the crap that "Normal" people fill their houses with. "Gaming has caused our child to lose touch with the rest of the family". So, where is the child's computer? In his/her bedroom? Put ANYTHING that is interesting in a child's bedroom, and the child will gravitate to that location when they are bored. Who put the computer in the bedroom? Who is at fault when the child withdraws to the bedroom?
My son is a total gaming fanatic. His computer is in the family room, where everyone else spends time. He is right there, where I can monitor what he is doing, talk to him about things (I know, a truly bizarre concept), and actually understand what he sees in his hobby. It's time for the Moron Majority to get a friggin life and enter the 21 century. Stop blaming "gaming" for your shitty parenting, and grow up.

Being a Brit I have to put up with this crap on a weekly basis given the nature of our tabloids, specifically the more right wing papers like The Daily Mail and The Daily Express. I would imagine it's 'staying indoors constantly' rather than gaming that causes rickets, but that view would be too sensible...

I've always thought the problem was a result of the media. The media has scared parents into letting their kids go out and play without supervision, so kids play indoor games instead. Like video games.

Alright so lack of sunlight can cause Rickets...

But too much sunlight causes skin cancer...

Because within about 20 minutes of ultraviolet exposure in light skinned individuals (3–6 times longer for pigmented skin) the concentration of vitamin D precursors produced in the skin reach an equilibrium, and any further vitamin D that is produced is degraded.

Suppose people should consider adding lamps with full spectrum lighting in the kids rooms to fix the vitamin d problem (can also be used for people who work at night and thus don't get enough sunlight during waking hours)

Thank you micron for correcting the sunlight as a source of vitamin D error!

[citation][nom]duckmanx88[/nom]😵 I thought the UK wasn't exactly known for its sunshine to begin with.[/citation]

Yea that's what I was thinking because in the US its not a bigger problem then it already was or is just because kids are playing games.
It sounds like it can contribute to people that don't like athletic activity's.I live in California so I don't really got to worry about not enough sun haha.Sometimes its too much sun.Plus I love the outdoors so that has something to do with it too.I play a lot of games as a kid but I also played a lot of outdoor games as a kid.Sometimes more than I would play video games.

I love the totally misleading title. The doctor is NOT blaming video games. He simply says that kids are staying indoors more, which is contributing to this. Why don't you use a title that's more appropriate ?

I thought they were going to say the Victorian era disease was "hysteria". *cough*

We have a similar problem in the Pacific Northwest of the US. We have so much cloud cover now that no one can get enough D naturally 6 to 9 months of the year. It doesn't matter much how much time you spend outside.
