I, too, was in the same boat. I wanted a headset with a mic for gaming, but sound quality (for music production) trumped having a mic attached. I went ahead and got myself the Audio-Technica ATH-M35 Stereo Monitor Headphones, my first good/non-crappy pair. Forgot what I paid for them, but I think I've had them for a year and a half now and they still sound fantastic. They sell for about $50 nowadays and are a steal, in my opinion.

I've just been using my mediocre Logitech webcam's mic, but I'll look into ModMic. Thanks, [jwk3]!

My opinion: I'd really place sound quality over having a mic, but that's just me. If that sounds good, I can recommend Audio-Technica or Sennheiser. I've only owned this one pair of Audio-Technica and one in-ear pair of Sennheiser headphones, but they're two, well-respected manufacturers and will get recommended a lot.

For the same price the non-headset will be better audio quality. I'm not sure if you were thinking of this or a desktop mic but have you head of a ModMic? I'm in a similar boat myself and wanting great audio quality with a boom mic so am looking at standard headphones +ModMic.
