I'm looking to buy a laptop for school (I'm an entering freshman to San Jose State University in CA). Student discounts would be a good plus. My desktop just went out of commission, so, this laptop would be a replacement for my desktop, but I'd also need it to use for school purposes. I'm pretty tech savvy, so no need to downplay the simple stuff.
1. What is your budget?
Around $1000.
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
Medium sized (15"-16").
3. What screen resolution do you want?
I'd really like to have Full HD, however, HD is good enough
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
This laptop would be the replacement for my desktop; however I would carry it around a lot. Weight is only a minor issue to me.
5. How much battery life do you need?
Battery life is really important to me. I like 5+ hours, but don't think of battery as a deal breaker.
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
I don't like to be limited from playing a game. Since this would be my sole computer, I want high graphics so that it will last. That doesn't mean it has to be top of the line, but I'd like medium to high graphics.
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
I'm a Software Engineering major, so I'm pretty sure gaming specs will cover anything I'll need..
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
I had 640GB in my cdesktop, so anything that or above, but I highly prefer 7200 rpm.
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
I am looking for price mainly, so pretty much anywhere. I do like xoticpc.com and lenovo's ideapad y510p (http/shop.lenovo.com/usstudents/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y510p/)..
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
I'd want to keep it for a few years through college. If I can (also depends on if it becomes out of date quickly), for 4-5 years.
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
I'd like to have a disc drive, but it's not needed since things are mostly downloads now. I do like the ultrabay tech.
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I am not picky, but I want a PC (Win 7 or 8). I like ASUS, but it doesn't really matter to much if it serves it's purpose.
13. What country do you live in?
US
14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
Webcam is preferred, but I do have a USB webcam to use if not. If you have any other questions, I'll answer.
