In the market for a laptop. Want to do some light gaming (probably nothing more intensive than MW2 on external monitor) but still be able to take notes all morning in class. Sister has a 15" dell, which is way too big for my tastes. I can't afford a Vaio Z (~$2K), but wouldn't mind spending around a grand, even a little more. Anything decent out there?

15" is too big? Then basically your looking at 14" laptops and under with a low-end but still decent graphics card like Geforce 9400M or ATI 3000 or 4000 series. Also Alienware has a gaming netbook that costs $800.

Yea, 15 is the very smallest for any gaming. any smaller and you might as well get a netbook man. Alineware has a very nice 15" gaming one though.

have a netbook, but i like being able to do media-related things on the go (hulu is as bumpy as flying into denver). dell bought alienware a couple of years ago, iirc, but how's the graphics card on the m11x? surely there's gotta be a decent 13"/14" asus or something with reasonable graphics power

The graphics card looks good, but the processor (whether you upgrade to the Core 2 Duo or not) is only 1.3GHz.

Custom build from there....up RAM to 4 GB , up HD speed to 7200 rpm, add WiFi and BT.
