A friend of mine at work is looking for a phone, be it unlocked or locked, which works with Tmobile, and where he can use the embedded wifi of the phone, and not have to worry about activating it with a data plan. Can anyone recommend a phone or phones which have wifi, but don't require a data plan for activation? Thanks

i am not sure about tmobile but verizon requires a data plan.

the only phones which are immune are basic phones and feature phones.

i would say check with tmobile to see if they will allow a smartphone with no data plan. if they require one he *might* be able to get away with getting a basic phone and plan then swapping the sim card out. this *might* work but would require more research on his part.

This usually involves paying full price for a phone because you are trying to buy an unlocked phone without a contract from some retailer.

An option is to simply buy an iPhone on from Virgin Mobile for either $550 or $650 depending on the model. Plans starts at $30 per month for 300 minutes and unlimited data. A $45 plan gives you 1,200 minutes and unlimited data.

The following site sells unlocked phones, however, whether or not a dataplan is required depends on the carrier. So while T-Mobile may allow you to use an unlocked smartphone on their network, they can still require you to buy a dataplan.

I never bought a phone from them.
