Agreed about Beyond compare but it is a different breed. NOTHING is as fast as Beyond Compare nor as powerful. SCOOTER Software are geniuses. But it is not used in the same way as these products.

The reality is long term rebustness without failing. SyncBackSE is more stable that all of these including Vice versa Pro which I crashed after three days on large Jobs but agree is the best looking product out there today and I too am amazed not included here.

I tested everything mentioned here with large sync jobs. GoodSync/ALLway sync are definately the second best but the xml database is just not refined enough yet. They are the exact same product. How that was missed I do not understand. The author admits it. SyncbackSE just does not fail and can support running mutiple simultaneous jobs. The fact it uses Windows Task manager is an advantage not a disadvantage. Why reinvent the wheel. Can you do better? Plus they wrote a front end for it. Damn did you really test these products or install them, run through it and right the article. This was not done well at all.

Second Copy has ben a favorite for many years. Easy, simple interface, wizard driven, lots of options. No remote sync though. Too many security issues. Use Google or something to store your files if you need remote anytime access.

The author didn't discuss delta file copy (partial copy). Superflexible, Jungledisk..... Also Fileback PC is another GREAT sync and backup util.

Have just tried Allway Sync and GoodSync and still prefer SuperFlexible File Synchronizer. Pity you missed that one. From previous comments, I'm not the only one who prefers it.

ViceVersa is an excellent piece of software, Memeo is another synching program - but they totally ruined it when they upgrade from 1.0 to 2.0.

SecondCopy 7 is a local file syncing program that is more powerful than the recommended AllwaySync, not least because it lets you keep multiple copies of deleted and modified files. Nothing will teach you the value of this like a sudden hard disk dropout (they do happen) and suddenly your entire synced backup is gone as well. I have enever lost a file with SC7 due to its massive redundancy features and have been using it since 2000.

What about Groove (now part of Microsoft Office 2007)? This is the granddaddy of sync software and by far superior to the others reviewed here. A one year subscription license costs $80.

I hate Microsoft, but I love Groove.

Toucan
toucan.pngsync, backup and secure, all in one place

Toucan is a custom built portable app for advanced users to synchronise, backup and encrypt their data, wherever they are.
Download Now 1.2.2 for Windows, English 2.1MBDetails

Important Note For 1.1 Upgraders / Blowfish Users: All encryption in Toucan 1.1 used Blowfish. From 1.2 on, Toucan defaults to Rijndael. If you wish to decrypt files encrypted with Toucan 1.1, you must select Blowfish as the decryption routine. The Blowfish method files are encrypted such that the decrypter can not tell if your password is correct, so if you enter an incorrect password it will corrupt your files. Always be sure to back up your data. Rijndael is now the default (and recommended) encryption method as it does not have this issue.

I'm sorry but you all should know something about allway sync, it seems like a very good application and it actually is but the reviewer didn't look at things like system requirements and memory usuage of the programs. I currently only tested allway sync and because of the way it is implemented (showing result tables) it's a huge memory hog ! for instance in a test setup on my computer allway sync was using 800 megs (800.000 KB) of memory after a few synchronisations, the only way to have this go down was by clearing the results manually. Bad design imo and no program should ever use such amounts of memory well at least not a syncing program !

The free version is basically useless.
The pro version works, but you have to buy multiple licenses if you want to sync among computers not networked together.
Rude and poor customer service.
Quote their responses:
"In no place on the homepage does it ever mention that you only need one license to do all mentioned things, it is UNDERSTOOD with all software that the more installations you require the more licenses you must purchase, this is not a new concept at all.

We have refunded your purchase, please uninstall and discontinue using our product and do not contact our support."

A sync software review is not complete without including the de-facto standard ViceVersa PRO @ www.tgrmn.com

I've been using FolderMatch and FolderClone for years and am extremely happy with them, not to mention the good technical support.

When I was looking for File Sync software I have found this thread extremly helpfull. I have decided for SyncToy 2.1. I love it.

I have been using the product about a year and have finally conceded to its unreliability. If it worked it would be an awesome product. But I have found it to be very unreliable most notably in its automated jobs. Support seems to be non-existent. I have not experienced any problems with launching a job manually. It however consistently aborts on the automated jobs and I can not get an answer from support regarding the problem. Also I had it syncing files with my web site at yahoo and they switched to requiring FTPS(Not SFTP) and the product does not support it. If you are looking for an automated synchronization software, I can not at this time recommend it.

I love AJC Sync and have been using it for years. Its one of the best at showing you exactly how its going to sync your files and it has a built in diff to compare file content with editing. I also can archive older versions of files to go back to if you make a mistake. See here:
http://www.ajcsoft.com/file-sync.htm
Also the support is excellent and they always get back to me when I have queries.
