Gif Image Editor...does it exist?

Does anyone know if there is a program (free or not) that will allow you to make a gif image lighter or darker? I have some gif images that are too dark and I would like to fix them.

I agree that GIMP will do what you want, but here is a hint:

After you load the GIF, before you do anything else, change the image mode from indexed to RGB. If you skip this first step you will be disappointed with the results when you lighten or darken the image.

@PhilFrisbie: I learned that the hard way. I spent hours trying to get past that point. Felt kinda stupid when I realized that I had to change 1 setting to move forward.
