Just hope these are not the news headlines in a few months lol:

"This just in, scientists have just discovered how to create stable fusion, making all green energy's obsolete and waste of time."

Whhhyyy would that be a bad thing!

Plenty new jobs, plenty of cheap power. It would be funny though. All the Physicists going "I TOLD YOU!!!!".

It would be a bad thing for Google that is, wasting all that money, if it where to happen, it would be one of the greatest achievements of human kind to date! Nearly unlimited amounts of energy would be the best thing that could happen right now.

@bogcotton: I think HDmac meant that for Google's sake. But hey, they can probably afford to lose $38.8 million. The benefits of stable fusion would be so great as be worth the demise of Google, anyway, even if it went that far (EXTREMELY unlikely!).

I read about these turbines on popsci. It makes sense for Google to invest in wind energy. 1) They reside in California where the power situation is embarrassing, and 2) they use a heck of a lot of energy and it makes sense to provide their own rather than buy it from some mis-managed co-op.

Me too. No such thing as a free lunch though... 🙁

I read that average wind turbine of 2 MW costs about $3 million. ($1.5 mil. for 1 MW.) How on earth did google find turbines which are 7 times cheaper?
May be, $38.8 million is only part of the total cost?

It search itself on Google.com and found the lowest prices.

[citation][nom]bogcotton[/nom]Yeh but, Yahoo! is has its very own bycicle turbine system creating 10 watts of power RIGHT NOW!!!Take that Google![/citation]

LOL!!

[citation][nom]Scotteq[/nom]< Patiently awaiting the PETA protests over birds getting injured/killed while flying through the arc of the blades >[/citation]

That would be Natural Selection anyway,l PETA can suck it.

[citation][nom]bogcotton[/nom]The best bit is that it's not a problem for birds, they tend to stay away from the giant whirring things. It is however a problem for bats, as it confuses their echolocation and they end up getting splattered. That must have some impact on the air resistance of the blades actually.(I'm not giving an opinion on any flame worthy topics here, it's all lighthearted =]).[/citation]

Why would Joker never thought about it to beat the Batman?

😀 😀 😀

I got excited also, I was going to fly to los angeles to grab as much money as i can for a split second...

Another clue that Google is actually skynet in disguise. Soon we won't be able to cut their power supply because they produce their own renewable energy!!

I like this news, north dakota has more wind then any one state needs. I live about 15 miles away from one of the biggest wind corridors in the us and wind mills are sprouting everywhere.

Google already gets 30% of its power from solar panels at its California campus..I wonder how close it is to 100% green power consumption with this investment

I myself work in the power sector. Most of so-called "green energy" sources aren't as environmentally friendly as you might think. Windfarms can and do kill birds and bats.. and a concerning amount of windfarm workers. Also keep in mind that "wind-power" will not grant you any discounts on your energy bill. In fact, I wouldnt be suprised if it increased. The actual cost per megawatt numbers are quite high.

The best investment option would be in nuclear (fission). They are not nearly as dangerous as many might think. In fact, all of the so-called "waste" stored underground is actually recycleable. Currently we (USA) are producing new fuel because it is cheaper, however, europe has been recycling fuel for years.
