Recently my amd card messed up and had to be replaced. I replaced both times with a gtx 860m and a gtx 765m with both gpus under performing my previous one.

Despite the having had the proper drivers installed from the website and had the control panel settings set properly. Games would have unstable frames that wont go beyond 30 for all(low, med, high, ultra) settings. Even a 2D sidescroller like Maplestory would suffer from bad frame rates. (not Vsync either, I've checked for both the game and the control panel)

I'm not a tech savvy person, I'm not sure if it's because i switched from amd to nvidia that caused the problem, or it's my computer that is the problem.

How should I proceed? Which GPU upgrade is the best?

i had a similar issue where the fps was shocking about (12fps) i used msi afterburner bumped the speed up a tiny bit and it seemed to fix the problem and now im getting (60-90fps)
i still am unsure what the problem was maybe it was auto throttling the card?
