A week ago I got a blue screen of death on the laptop while some updates were being installed. Afterwards, attempted system recovery, restore to old recovery point. Managed twice to get to windows to start but after 5 minutes, the blue screen comes up. Blue screen comes with different error codes. SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, etc. Called Microsoft support. They said my RAM has gone. Changed the RAM with a new RAM. Same thing. Dell thinks it is the memory or the motherboard. They ask for ridiculous money for repair. In essence, their supports amounts to marketing expensive repair options.Shame on Dell! The laptop is only 2 years old and taken care of, all the time on an office table and not moved around. I have tried fresh windows install with usb bootable device and with dvd bootable device. Blue screen comes up all the time. Hardware diagnostics passes with no errors. BIOS is the latest v 1.2.7. I am happy to install everything fresh but I can't do even that. Tried most of the bios options. No luck. Any ideas? Throw the laptop? Will never buy Dell again. That is for sure.

Try starting it up in "Safe Mode" and see if you get any errors in there. That will help you in determining if it is hardware or not. It is possible there was a bad update involved, but try this to see first. If it still turns off while in "Safe Mode", then I would look at taking it to a local tech.

How to enter "Safe Mode" when booting the computer.

In Windows 8 and 10...

c. Press the "F6" key to Enable "Safe Mode" with Command Prompt.
(In "Safe Mode" with "Command Prompt" starts Windows in Safe Mode, with a Command Prompt window instead of the Windows interface. This option is mostly only used by IT professionals.)

Now sign in to the computer with your account name and password. (If you have one set.) When you are finished troubleshooting, you can exit "Safe Mode" restarting your computer.

In Windows 7/Vista/XP...

1. Immediately after turning on the computer, or restarting it (usually after you hear your computer beep), tap the F8 key, repeatedly, in 1 second intervals.

2. The computer will then display hardware information and run a memory test.

3. Next the "Advanced Boot Options" menu will appear.

4. In the "Advanced Boot Options" menu use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking" and press ENTER.

I get the BSOD in the beginning of starting safe mode at different stages. I have taken out the hard drive and tried rebooting having only a USB bootable device. BSOD again. Even re-flashed the BIOS. BIOS is working ok. But I can not reach safe mode. I am concluding there is a fault in the motherboard.
